Create your own game in Construct 2!

Create your own game in Construct 2!

I recently began learning how to make games in a very simple program called Construct 2, made by Scirra games! It is a program that doesn’t require any coding experience or game-making experience! I had an assignment for school to give instructions on how to do something I know how to do. I thought that many of my readers would like to see the instructions as well. Here they are:

Making Video Games: The First Steps
By HelloTyler

So, you want to make a video game for the computer? Well, today I’m going to teach you how to make games in Construct 2, the easy, simple game-making program. Unfortunately, I can’t teach you to make a full game, because that would probably take a lot of instructions to teach. Instead, I’m going to teach you the first steps on how to make a simple side-scroller, complete with your very own controllable character, a background, platforms for the player to walk on, and more.
Step by Step
First, download and install the free version of Construct 2 off of scirra.com. Now open the program. Once you’ve opened the program, you should see an opening screen. In the top left corner, click “File” and select “New”. On the left, you should see “Size”. Change it to 4000 x 2048. Also, change the “Position” to 0, 0.
Now, let’s make a background. Double click the white space in the middle of the screen. That white space is what the screen will look like when the game starts. A small window will pop up with multiple types of objects to make. Click “Tiled Background”. Now click “Insert”. Another window will pop up. You can make your own background in this window, but a safer option is to make it in a photo editing program. (Photoshop, Paint, etc.) Make sure to make the background 4000 x 2048. Now, go back into Construct 2, and Click the little folder in the top left corner of the window that opened after you selected the “Tiled Background”. Upload the background that you made. Now hold the “Control” button and scroll the mouse wheel down to zoom out. The white chart on the left should have changed. Change its “Size” to 4000 x 2048 and its “Position” to 0, 0.
To the right, you should see a “Projects” tab. At the bottom should be a button that says “Layers”. Click it. In it should be layer zero. If you want, rename it by clicking the pencil icon, and type in “Background”. Now, create another background by clicking the green plus. If you want, rename this layer “Main”. Select the “Background” layer and click the lock. This makes it so you won’t accidentally select it while trying to select something else. Click the “Main” layer again.
Now we create the platforms for the player to walk on. Double click what used to be the white space again. Click “Sprite” and “Insert”. Go into your photo editing program and create a block. You can make a very fancy looking platform, a brown block, or something else; just make sure it’s a square. Now, upload it to Construct 2. Next, make the size on the chart to the left 24, 24. Of course, with just one block, the player has absolutely nowhere to go. So, Hold the “Control” button and click and drag the block. You’ve just made another block! At the top, under “View”, click “Snap to grid”. This will make it easier to connect blocks.
Let’s make the player. Double click the space, click “Sprite”, and “Insert”. Make the character in your photo editing program, and upload it. Do you see the empty space around the character? That should be taken out, because it takes up memory, and makes the game that much slower. In the top part of the window, there should be a rectangle with arrows on the four sides. Hold the “Shift” button and click it. Now, let’s set the image origin. In this case, the origin makes sure that the player won’t get stuck in the platforms. Click the Button underneath the piece of paper, and set the point at the player’s feet. (If it doesn’t have feet, put it where the feet would be.) If you want to, rename the object to “Player”.
On the chart to the left, there should be some thing that says “Add/edit” under “Behaviors”. Click it, and select the green plus. Next, select “Platform”, and click “Add”.
On the window that was opened on the last step, make the “Jump Speed” 1100 and the “Gravity” 2500. Now click the green plus again and add “Scroll to”. This way the screen will follow the player.
Select the block object that the player is supposed to walk on. Add the behavior called “Solid”. Now the player won’t fall through the block. Double click the space again. Select “Keyboard”. This just enables the keyboard to be able to be used. Now, go to the tab which is titled “Event Sheet”. This basically tells what is supposed to happen when the game starts, when the player falls off the screen, when an enemy is hit, or anything else. Add an action by double clicking. Double click the keyboard, and click “Next”. Click “On key pressed”. Now click “click to choose” and press the left arrow key. Now click “Add action”. Double click “Player” and choose the action called “Set player mirrored”. Lastly, add an identical event, except use the right arrow key, and set “Not mirrored”.
While I can’t give you the whole set of instructions, you should probably be able to figure out the rest by now. It is basically the same routine, adding events, objects, and other things. After reading four long pages about how to make a game in Construct 2, you may be surprised to find out that this is the simplest game making program that I’ve heard of! You may be happy to know that you can make games for multiple mobile devices in Construct 2. All you have to do is change the controls to touch controls, and buy the full version. Then, upload your game file (which should end in “.html5”) to phonegap.com.

Green Lantern Sly Cooper Variant Story

Green Lantern Sly Cooper Variant Story

Here is a background story I made for the Sly Cooper Green Lantern Variant. This story may change, depending on how Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time ends. Here is a link to the page with all of the Green Lantern Variants. I would like to make a Dimitri variant as well, but I can’t find a good enough quality picture. If you find one, send it to me on my wall on the wiki, and I’ll give you credit.

In Brightest Day, In blackest night, no LOOT shall escape my sight…

Sometime after the events of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Sly Cooper went back to Rajan’s temple, looking for any expensive loot. He entered a building, and found an old spice shipment crate. He smashed it open, and found a green lantern ring. Bentley said, “Sly, my sensors are going crazy!Sly Cooper Green Lantern Flying It’s that ring, it must hold great power!”, so Sly put it on. He immediately was changed into a green suit with a quick flash. Confused, Sly ran on some rooftops to clear his mind.

Sly began jumping from rooftop to rooftop. He jumped off a rooftop, expecting to land on another one. He looked down, and a fast river was underneath him. Sly closed his eyes, praying that something would save him. After a minute or two, he realized that he hadn’t landed. He was FLYING. He flew back on a rooftop, even more confused than before. He thought for a minute, and remembered Bentley’s words. “…It’s that ring, it must hold great power!” Just then, a guard hit him. His ring gave him great altitude, and he fell on another rooftop, and smashed into another spice crate. After being hit into that crate, he became slightly disoriented. He started swiping his cane left and right, and a green cane appeared and hit the guard into the river. It was then that he realized that he could create green objects.

Sly went back to the safehouse and told the gang all that had happened. Then Bentley hacked into the ring, and found out what it was for. He said that he hadn’t ever heard of the Green Lantern Corps, and that he suspected it was from a different dimension. After that, Bentley made copies of the ring for each member of the gang.

Videocast podcast – Sly Cooper, Ham On The Run, Mega Man and More!

Videocast podcast – Sly Cooper, Ham On The Run, Mega Man and More!

Today I’ve published my first videocast to the iTunes store. I won’t usually create videocasts, but I had many subjects to talk about, so I decided to record one today. Sorry about the noise in the background. I recorded in my dad’s office and the air conditioner was really loud.

I discussed five topics in this episode:

  • Sly Cooper’s Tenth Anniversary
  • Sly Cooper Thieves In Time Update
  • Ham On The Run App
  • The Archie Mega Man Comic
  • Recent Updates To My Blog

By the way, I noticed that the video player plugin I am using doesn’t work in Chrome. It works in Firefox though.

Also, I would like to say “Happy Birthday” to Sly Cooper. This isn’t just any old birthday though. It’s his tenth! Today marks the tenth anniversary of the release of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus. Here is a picture I made, which is also included in the videocast.

Sly Cooper Gang Green Lantern Variants

Here are some pictures that I’ve made for fun. They are the Cooper gang, only as Green Lanterns. I’m going to also make a Dimitri Green Lantern, I just need to find a good quality picture. Here is a link that you can get to each of their pages. I might need to change some of the backstory, depending on how Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time ends.

New Page with desktop wallpapers, bumper stickers, and more!

As you might have noticed, there have been a couple of changes to the website. First, I’ve replaced the I-phone button with my real logo, which is an illustration of my face. After all, this is “Hellotyler.com”, not “I-phone.com”! Also, I’ve added the “Downloads” page, which will have many different wallpapers, bumper stickers, and other fun things! Stay tuned, there may be more new things coming soon!

LittleBigPlanet Karting BETA, Wii U, and Google: Project Glass

LittleBigPlanet Karting BETA, Wii U, and Google: Project Glass

I haven’t updated this website in a while, so I decided to do one BIG post about all of the things that I’ve been meaning to post.

LittleBigPlanet Karting BETA!!!
I applied for LBP Karting Beta a while back, and I got excepted! The game stays true to the other LBP games in that you can still decorate your pod, create and publish levels, and decorate your earth and moon. There are still minigames, and the level select is the same. It uses similar controls to Modnation Racers, the reason being because it is made by the Modnation company, United Front Games. The vehicles are either things from LBP, or just funny ideas. Below are pictures from the game.

Wii U
My dad took me to a developer meet-up where they let us play the Wii U before anybody else! Wii U is the second version of the Wii. It comes with a Gamepad that has 2 analog sticks, a camera, a microphone, a gyroscope, and can also control your TV. The buttons are the four action buttons, (X, Y, A, and B.) the +control pad, the +start and -select buttons, The L, R, ZL, and ZR buttons, and the home button. It ALSO comes with a screen and a stylus. The Wii U system is compatible with the old Wii accessories, including the remotes.

Here are my favorite games that I played at the meet-up:

Donkey Kong Crash Course – In this game, the object is to roll your vehicle through the course to Princess Peach. Easy, right? WRONG. I’m 99% sure that nobody was able to get to the princess in their 3 tries. Why, you ask? Simple. You can’t got too fast, because you’ll collide with the wall. You also can’t go too slow, or you’ll topple over. on top of that, you have to move platforms with the analog sticks, and ZR and ZL. The gyroscope in the new controller senses when you tilt it back and forth, and the vehicle moves accordingly. I’m assuming that the level that was playable was NOT the first level, so by the time you get to that level, it probably isn’t as hard. (I couldn’t find any pictures for this game.)

New Super Mario Bros. U – In this sequel to the NSMBros. series, there are some new features. The first one is the Flying Squirrel suit, which allows Mario and his friends to glide once the also-new Acorn Mushroom is obtained. The next one is my favorite. Baby Yoshis appear, and have three different abilities. To inflate like a balloon, glow in darkness, and to blow bubbles to cause Koopas to float away. All three can eat guards when they are carried. The Gamepad is able to make platforms appear for the player to jump on in a certain mode. The final new feature is that you can play as your Mii in the game. The only problem that I had with it was that It didn’t have much use for the Gamepad.

Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition – This is an add-onto the original Arkham City game. It uses the Gamepad in many different ways, including controlling a RC Batarang, and investigating a crime scene. It was VERY fun to play, but I had a problem with it. My problem was that it was WAY too easy to fight. All you have to do is keep hitting Y, and he will automatically launch and attack nearby guards. I hadn’t ever played it before, and I don’t think I took any damage. But it was still an Awesome game.

Google: Project Glass
There is a project that google is working on called “Project Glass”. It is the idea that a small machine can connect to glasses to make them into a type of smartphone. It uses voice command, and can take pictures, make phone-calls, text, give directions, show news, give the weather, and so much more. Of course, you don’t have to have glasses to use them. It will be a little bit expensive, but is still very cool. Bellow is a video, showing the features I’ve said and more.

Big Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time News

Big Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time News

I have come across some news that the moderator of the Sly Cooper wiki posted. He posted a screenshot of all of the Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time episode titles. By looking at the titles, I could figure out which of Sly’s ancestors are going to be featured in the game. This is all subject to change, and I am not 100% sure that these are the right ancestors.

Here are the episode names:

  • Paris Prologue
  • Turning Japanese
  • Go West Young Raccoon
  • Clan of the Cave Raccoon
  • Holy Grail Robin!
  • Forty Thieves
  • Paris Epilogue
  • Minigamnes

Here are the ancestors that I think are going to be featured in the game:

  • Rioichi Cooper
  • Tennessee “Kid” Cooper
  • Slaigh MacCooper
  • Sir Galleth
  • Salim al Kupar of Arabia
  • Sly’s Father cameo appearance

This answers a lot of questions that were on the Sly Cooper Wiki and I hope it answers some of your questions about Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

Leap Motion Control

Leap Motion Control

My dad found a very cool video on Mashable that he showed me. It is a preview of a product called Leap Motion. The idea is that 8 cubic feet in front of your computer will be an interactive space to use with your hands. Your hands can control your computer, just like your mouse. It’s only $70 and it is supposed to be 200 times more sensitive than Microsoft Kinect. You will be able to plug it into a USB port. It is supposed to come out in December 2012 or January 2013, so you have to pre-order. Here is a cool video:
